I was driving on I-80 west in Iowa when my car ran out of gas. I tried flagging someone down and got hit by an SUV—it clipped my ankle and I tumbled into a frozen creek. I’d broken my hip when I hit the ice. They rushed me to the hospital—I stayed for about a month. I stayed with my mom. I became homeless when she went into rehab for smoking crack. I went to the Boulevard—it provides temporary housing to homeless dealing with medical issues. I go to AA every day for my drinking problem. I started going to church. I’m working with the VA and Volunteers of America to get my own apartment. Once I’m all healed up, I’ll get a job with my cousin at a warehouse where they process chickens.
